File Sharing
I have a network with one Linux machine and samba 2.0.7 as well as two windows 98 machines. We use one hard disk on the Linux machine to share important project files. Often we create new directories and here is the problem: The one creating the directory has full access (of course) but the other has not! I put create mode 777 but that is not done. The folder is /home/tmp but it is shared

Problem with SysLinux but not with LILO
Hi, I am trying to use two products that use SysLinux and finally realised the SysLinux is the cause of my woes. I'm trying to use Freesco and IPCop. IPCop version 1.3 used a different boot loader to 1.4 which uses SysLinux. I have been through numerous trials and tribulations in trying to get Freesco to work but eventually gave up and went with IPCop. I kept getting the "Boot Failed" error message. I went of to use IPCop in...

WINS server
Hi all. Ok, I'm sufficiently pissed off now. Hopefully someone can help. Since I have no NT4 servers on the network, I'd like to be domain master, and a wins server. So I've added the following to the global section: local master = yes os level = 33 domain master = yes preferred master = yes wins support = yes And now I receive the following message:

PPPoE w/ "static" /29 ip range, how is it done?
...'d also like the experience, since I''ve been messing with traffic, IDS and NAT for a while and I''m more interested in larger networks career wise, and they are typically not NATed. So how do I do this? Do I have to rewrite all the iptables/ipchains myself? Can e-smith or freesco or ipcop understand what I''m doing? Is there a way to test that the ISP is correctly routing the /29 traffic to the IP I get for the external link? I suspect anything I may do will be a waste of time if the ISP is misconfigured on their end. My early scratchings around the net indicat...

OT: firewalls
What is everyone using for a firewall? I'm currently using www.astaro.com but their recent releases have soured me on ASL as a practical solution on my hardware (1.2MHz Athlon, 30G, and 256M). I only have 4 computers going through the firewall wall but it's consistently at 50% cpu load. There is very little network traffic (<10k bits per second on the wan connection, < 40k

Asterisk server with remote monitoring capabilities
Hello, all. I'm tired of having to drive out to the colocation facility each time my dedicated asterisk server craps out, just to press the button to do a hard reboot. (I'm running 1.05 stable at present, no telephony hardware, as this is mainly a system that receives calls, no dial-out ability is needed.) I've been looking at the fancy xeon-based systems listed on ebay for a couple

Crossbow and UML
...ed testing free/swan on a virtual testbed using UML. gosh... matching the root filesystem version with the kernel was the biggest fight...lately had to build my own with mkrootfs :) ... best view of these virtual machines comes when you run a sniffer like ettercap on mother system .... god knows if freesco router project is still alive or not but it was a great help.... anyway guys crossbow seems promising.. will try my hand on it...
