Is there a way to prevent other users from being able to map a drive from windoww95/NT to anyother user directory on the system. For example I can map to anyone's account on the system and have read only access, is there a way to stop this in either the global or share level? Thanks

G'day all, I am new to the list, so please be careful with me :-)....Some background I am a developer not a network person, but I do like to play with hardware. I have just installed samba 1 9 18p8 (I think this is the version number) on Linux redhat 5.1. The Linux box is a home PC that I use for data store, email and general playing around with. I am connected to my works MS network via ISDN with a nortel-nautica unit that is doing address translation. (keep with it I'll get there in a minute). This allows me to have many PC's and printer connected at home on the works network. Now my problem, I can log on to my works network at boot time and 'see' my Linux box on the floor next to me. But any other PC in the room can't 'see' the Linux box if I don't log in via work. If I do log in there is no problem. What I would like to do I have one of the PC's be able to see shares on the Linux box without having to log in at work, obviously I want my wife to be able to use the resources without me logging her in and of course it is difficult to justify Sarah having an account at work :-). Now I think I should be able to get around this be enabling 'domain logon' on the Linux box, but I am not sure if this is going to effect by works network in any way. Can anyone shed some light, or am I up a creek with no paddle... 'ooroo Mike...(:)-)

i've set samba up on a redhat linux machine on my personal network with an IP-Address of 192.168.32.1 there are two win98 client machines on my network with the addresses 192.168.32.2 and 192.168.32.3. the two machines have the exact same tcp/ip configurations. i can log onto the samba server from the first 98box, but not the second. i can logon with any user name from the first 98box, but i can't log on with any user names from the second 98box. if i switch the ip addresses i still can't logon from the second box and i can logon from the first. teh smb.conf file has a hosts allow entry that allows all host on the 192.168.32. subnet to logon to the box. all the machines can see one another, but i can't logon with the second 98box. any ideas what else could be wrong? breca

Hello. I'm trying to get samba up and going for a cdrom server with no luck. Let me describe my setup so that you can hopefully catch something obivous that I'm doing wrong. Novell netware server(ipx) / Linux box(firewall, router)----hubs------computers(Win95/98) \ Linux Cdrom Server(samba) The linux box that's the firewall is what does the routing and assigns the ips. The firewall on it Does block netbios, etc.... I'm currently using mars_nwe on the cdrom server but the Novell server is about to be switched to NT and will then use tcp/ip so I will not be able to use mars_nwe any longer with the cdrom server. Therefore I must use samba. I'm trying to go ahead and get samba up with the novell server up and trying to make the cdrom server the wins server but I'm not having any luck with the win95 computers seeing it. As I said before, that firewall does block netbios, etc.. but does that matter with using samba locally and does it matter that Novell is up and running right now which is the main netware server? Thanks for any help.

Hi, Have you set up an samba account according to your Windows login? The password request pop's up 'cause you want to access a share that's not configured to be accessable with your windows login. Do: 1) create a samba user with the same name as your windows login 2) do smbpasswd 3) in the config (smb.conf) give the user (your windows login) the rights for the share(s) you want to access 4) brows the share ;-) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rodionov E." <gan@pfr.karelia.ru> To: <samba@samba.org> Sent: Monday, April 16, 2001 11:46 AM Subject: question> Hi ! > Can you help me ? > Why my samba 2.0.7, don't ask login name? when i connect to it fromwindows?> It requests only password :(, but my windows login name and unix login > name do not coincide. > In log samba writes, that connect from user <my windows login>. > What have i do ? > Please help me. > With best wishes, Eugene > > > P.S.: sorry for my english :) > > > > > -- > To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the > instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba >
Hello Rodionov, A couple of things. If your unix user name and windows login name are different, you will need to use the usermap option in smb.conf and create the mapping between your windows login name to your unix login name. for instance, in the user.map file, if you unix name is tom, but your windows login name is jerry, you would have the entry: jerry = tom In addition, if you are using userlevel security for samba, EITHER you will need to make a registry hack on the windows machine to make it send cleartext passwords, or you will have to create an smbpasswd file to add your windows user and password via the smbpasswd command; see chapter 6 in the O'Reilly "Using Samba" manual, available for purchase or online at http://www.samba.org/samba/oreilly/using_samba/ for specific details on how to do this. Hope this helps, Don -----Original Message----- From: Rodionov E. [mailto:gan@pfr.karelia.ru] Sent: Monday, April 16, 2001 6:46 AM To: samba@samba.org Subject: question Hi ! Can you help me ? Question: Not sure if you have an issues database to do a search and see if you have had a similar problem in the past. Here is the scenario we are going through. I hope you have ran across something like this before or perhaps have some hints on what to look for. The explanation is not very technical but if you need additional information do not hesitate to ask. We have NT workstations accessing a UNIX server via SAMBA, we are using a fairly up-to-date release. A software we are using on these workstations requires for a service to run on the workstation to allow any user to sign on as themselves (Joe, Mary, Bob for examples) but it is seeing by the server as being user "myadmin" ("myadmin" for example). User "myadmin" has full access to the files (read, write, execute) on the share. The regular users only have read access to the files on the share, without the running service to disguise the user as "myadmin" a regular user can only read the files and is not allowed to write. We have had problems with the software in that it crashes at different times. We narrowed down the issue but are stuck in figuring out why. What is happening is that when the user starts out using the software it is seeing by the server as having full access to the files like it should "myadmin". It works fine for a while until out of the blue the file locks changed and the user only has read access to the files not allowing the common user (Joe, Mary, Bob) to save their work. What could be causing the file locks to change? One minute the server thinks it is "myadmin" logged on with full privileges to the files as it should and everything works wonderful. Then the file locks change and the user can not save their work? It is almost as if the workstation is telling the server I am "myadmin" to start with and sometime later changes telling the server it is some other user (Joe, Mary, Bob). Have you seen this happen before? Any ideas on a possible cause? I appreciate any help you can provide Thanks, eagerly awaiting your reply, Betsy Betsy Matallana de James Kimball Electronics 812.634.4775 -------------- next part -------------- HTML attachment scrubbed and removed

Hello, Could you please answer my question? I am not sure it's SAMBA's bug so I would like you to advice. I have an NT service (written by me) which runs on remote server. A remote client connects to it and accesses COM object residing there. When I tested it in pure NT environment all worked. Now I transferred it to SAMBA 2.2.1a controlled network and it doesn’t work. hr = CoCreateInstance(.., IID_IDog, &pDog); // hr is S_OK and pDog is not NULL hr = pDog->Bark(); // Oops! hr is E_ACCESSDENIED Is this some kind of SAMBA 2.2.1a problem? These questions would be better asked on the samba mailing list. My guess (not having enough info in what you sent) is a name resolution issue. Are your machines on the same subnet? Try the tests in DIAGNOSIS.txt in the samba docs directory. With the Win95 client if it is OSR2 you will need a registry fix for plaintext passwords applied there as well.> Marco Antonio Rojano Gonzalez wrote: > > Mr. Lewis > > Excuse me, I write from Mexico I have a question and could yoy help > me, please??: > > > I have a samba (v .2.2.0) installed on sun unix server with solaris > 7 called dico_samba (IP address 200.20.301.20; for example). Hello, I'm looking for a piece of software that can run on my Solaris machine, and can be used to verify users on my local NT domain controller... In other words... 1) User visits my website which is housed on my Solaris box. 2) My perl script takes a username and password and executes a command line based program to verify the username and password entered as a valid domain account. 3) The program returns "Valid" or "Not valid" 4) My perl script acts accordingly. I basically want a way for the Sun Box to validate a username and password against the NT domain controller. Is there a way to do this in Samba? If not, is there a better way? Any suggestions? I don't know if this is a bug or what, some of the files in my smb mounted dirctory are returning the wrong file size. Also when I try to open the files, they are not complete. The shared directory is from a Windows XP machine and the files are greater than 1Gigabyte each. This does not hapen to other files in the directory. Also the "good files", the ones that are not truncated, display the message "Value too large for defined data type". I already tried changing the ttl setting in smbmount, I still have the same problem. What can I do to get all the files to be displayed correctly? Thanks.

Since I put alot of reliability in listservs.... I want to do the following things. I run a Linux server on a completely Win2K network. I want the Linux server, when someone's password is updated through the domain controller, to automatically update the Linux server, so when we update someone's password, or disable someones account in Win2k domain, it also disables it on the Linux server. Also, I want to be able to set up a partition (say "/home") on my linux server, where people can just go into Network Neighborhood and go into their share folder in the Linux server as if it were just a F/P server in a win domain. I am assuming Samba does both of these. However, I dont' know how... can someone point me in the right direction. Joel

However, I dont' know how... can > someone point me in the right direction. >You can do this with winbind. Take a look at this: http://ranger.dnsalias.com/mandrake/samba/Integrating%20Linux%20into%20Windows%20Networks.tar.gz IMHO, Mandrake 9.0 is the quickest way to get this, plus you can use ACLs out-the-box. Reccomended procedure: 1)Install Mandrake 9.0 in expert mode 2)Where you enter the root password, choose "Windows Domain" as authentication type. 3)Enter the domain name in CAPS If your domain allows anonymous access, you should be able to log into the machine with a domain account on first boot. But the default config doesn't have any shares enabled, so: # cp /etc/samba/smb-winbind.conf /etc/samba/smb.conf Replace the 'workgroup = ' line in your new /etc/samba/smb.conf with the domain name, install samba-server (urpmi samba-server), start samba (service smb start) and it should make a home directory for any user who authenticates, even via samba. So, connecting to \\server\username\ should work out-the-box. To get ACLs working, you should either use XFS as the filesystem that your shares will be on, or add the 'acl' mount option to ext2/ext3 filesytems in your /etc/fstab. Note the tarball above has configs that should accomplish the same on Redhat 8.0 (except possibly for the winbind groups problem people are talking about). I'm a Windows user who is a newbie to Linux (and obviously to Samba), having just installed it for the first time yesterday. I run three computers, a desktop and two laptops. I've gotten everything set up just fine so far -- my network is working, I can access email and the web (my internet connection is on the desktop and I'm working on one of the laptops) and can access my files on the other computers. The only thing I can't seem to make work is the printers (which are located on the Windows computer). I have Samba set up, have followed the instructions (I thought), but when I try to print a test page I get the message "Unable to connect to Samba host." I realize that I've probably overlooked something extremely obvious, but can someone help me out here? Oh, and I have set up Samba to load automatically when Linux is started. -- -------- Anne Pyle anne.pyle@verizon.net http://www.ceannmor.com --------
Please see my post for the share printer thread for some information on your printing question.> Oh, and I have set up Samba to load automatically when Linux is started. The best way is to use the startup scripts provided for each daemon with adjusting the files in rc[0-6].d to properly start and stop these daemons as you change run levels (start and stop the machine, etc.) To start any daemon automatically with the startup scripts, you have to mess around either with some GUI configuration tool (settings), or the files in /etc/rc.d/rc[0-6].d. If all else fails, just put these commands in rc.local /usr/local/samba/bin/smbd -D /usr/local/samba/bin/nmbd -D To find the files, locate rc.local and which smbd and which nmbd might help. Note that the startup scripts have beome increasingly complex over the last few years. Even for someone who knows some bash they are very difficult to follow, since each vendor does things suprisingly different. This home brew script does a fine job for me: #!/bin/bash case "$1" in start) killall smbd killall nmbd /usr/local/samba/bin/smbd -D /usr/local/samba/bin/nmbd -D ;; stop) killall smbd killall nmbd ;; reload) kill -SIGHUP `cat /usr/local/samba/var/locks/smbd.pid` kill -SIGHUP `cat /usr/local/samba/var/locks/nmbd.pid` ;; *) echo Usage: echo start stop reload ;; esac exit 0 Joel

Hello! I have a problem and do not know is there any way to solve it. I have a Samba-server running as a PDC in a Windows2000 network. It works fine. But now I need to install the Squid on the same machine with Samba-PDC. And it would be fine if I could use ntlm authentication in Squid. But to do so I need to run winbindd. Any information I could find discribes how to do this if there are at least 2 machines: PDC and Squid+Samba+winbind. But I need it running on the only one machine. Can I do this? Samba configuration files on the PDC and Squid-computer according to discribtions must be different. I run Samba and Squid under a FreeBSD4.8. Cuold you help me with a wise advice? Thank you. Alexey

Can you send a copy of your smb.conf file?? I had this same problem when I set up my Win2K machine, and Samba. It will give others an idea on what you have done to this point. -----Original Message----- From: samba-bounces+spierce=page-developer.net@lists.samba.org [mailto:samba-bounces+spierce=page-developer.net@lists.samba.org]On Behalf Of Seydel Molina Sent: Friday, July 18, 2003 8:04 AM To: samba@samba.org Subject: [Samba] Question I have a unix machine. hi, i am completely new to using linux(i use red hat8) and samba. after configuring and running samba to connect( i use linneighborhood) my main windows machine(not a server, just one of the two machine that forms my home network), I could use the internet connection and the folders that were allowed to be shared on the windows machine. however the internet connection (using a telephone based modem on he windows machine) gave me a thought ..... is it possible to access the sound, video, tv tuner card on the windows machine from he linux machine on the network. the solution or the possible lack of it will help me understand more about how linux/neworking works and would be highly appreciated thanks, dhiman das Dhiman Das dhiman@hotmail.com _________________________________________________________________ Working moms: Find helpful tips here on managing kids, home, work — and yourself. http://special.msn.com/msnbc/workingmom.armx
