Am I being to paranoid?
Hi All,
I want to know thoughts on if I am being to paranoid/security conscious.
CentOS 5.6, Apache, MySQL, running an Firewall in front of everything and obviously the built-in firewall on the box. I have ssh on a different port and starting to use Keys instead of password authentication. I host an intensive website and I am getting about 150 unique visitors per day.
What I am seeing is

Samba, OS X Tiger 10.4 plain text password, username null-padded?
Our samba server is running Solaris 9 and Samba 3.0.2.a . For reasons
*outside the scope of this question* we are using plaintext passwords
and authenticating via our NFS server. (I know this isn't a great
idea, but that's not the question)
With Panther, plaintext passwords worked fine. Snooping, I see the
plain text password and username go through.
With Tiger, we first had to apply

Permission issue
Hi,
We did a classicupgrade of our Ubuntu Server (4.3.11, TDB), the server DC5 also host shares. Post the migration we are seeing some permission issues.
When trying to give permission to a domain group/user to folder/file we get the following
chown "LIN\\myadmin:LIN\\adgroup" adtest/

Apache attacks - you can't stop them, or can you?
So I have this nice, simple web server up running. Its purpose is to
allow me external testing with HIP, and to provide some files for
external distribution. Of course, there it is sitting on port 80 and
the attacks are coming in per logwatch report. Examples from the report
include:
Requests with error response codes
404 Not Found
//phpMyAdmin-2.5.1/scripts/setup.php: 1

PMA attacks
It appears to be a low-level attack, not so frequent as to be banned
permanently, just a number of times a day.
I did google on this, and I gather it's looking for phpmyadmin. We've been
getting one from one specific network in Russia for weeks

win2000 and samba
Hi,
We have a samba server 2.2.4 in a RH 6.2 Linux system. I should say that
the samba server is working well except for a win2000 workstation. For
this win2000, the user can mount network drive to the samba server, e.g.
H: to \\sambaserver\username, it asks the password, if entered correctly.
it is connected. No problem at all. However, if the user reboots the
win2000, the poblem comes.

Memory R and Windows2000
Hello,
when using: rm(list=ls(all=TRUE)) and gc() command , and looking at the
memory
used by Rgui.exe in window2000 there is no change.
this is strange .
Actually I need to be sure that memory is given back to the system
because the users of the application I wrote under R are opening and closing
big files of data;
can I rely on the gc() function under win2k?

Domain join issues - 4.9.0
Hi,
After a recent hardware failure where I did not have a working backup,
I am trying to re-create one of my DCs (DC1). This is a Samba 4.9.0
environment throughout. I have DC1 (the one that is hopefully being
re-joined), but also DC2, DC3 and DC4 which are still present, and
these have not experienced issues.
After running the following:
$ sudo samba-tool domain join mydomain.org DC -U myadmin

RE: Relocating the directory for ruby_sess.* files
Please, someone can tell me where session data are stored on Windows, using
Webrick in its default configuration?
After storing an object into @session, I initially can access only the
controller that has stored the object. Otherwise, the html page displays
"Not found" and the Webrick console displays:

Novice question - How to completely disable printing and /etc/printcap errors ?
I'm running Samba 3.0.21a (blastwave build) on Solaris 9. The Solaris
servers have no printers attached or accessible, just file service. Samba
users authenticate off a Win2003 AD controller and get printing from that.
I got rid of the "Unable to connect to CUPS Server" errors by adding to
smb.conf the line
printing=bsd
but I am still getting
smbd[4809]: [ID 702911 daemon.error]

Hi Rowland,
The user's ID range would have been below 3600, the current max rid is 3506
The links have been setup following this link, then restarted the samba-ad-dc service

Is it bad for my web document folder to be user accessible?
PHP and MySQL seem to working on my CentOS installation.
I'd like to install phpMyAdmin as well, so I downloaded the necessary
files from phpMyAdmin's homepage and copied them to /var/www/html...
... except that's where the process stopped. My regular user account
doesn't have permission to write into the /var/www/html folder.
Should I just chmod the folder to 777? Is there a
