rsync - Feb 2011 - problems making a daily backup via rsync.

Hi there:

I'm doing a backup of some of my machines via rsync, and I have the next
problem:

ssh: connect to host mx2.ecliente.com port 22: Connection timed out
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (0 bytes received so far) [receiver]
rsync error: unexplained error (code 255) at io.c(635) [receiver=3.0.3]
[Tue Feb 22 02:51:55 CET 2011] /usr/bin/rsync -az --delete --numeric-ids
--relative --delete-excluded --rsh=/usr/bin/ssh root at server1:/opt/exim
/data/backups/server1
[Tue Feb 22 02:51:55 CET 2011] /usr/bin/rsync -az --delete --numeric-ids
--relative --delete-excluded --rsh=/usr/bin/ssh root at server1:/etc
/data/backups/server1

As you can see the error arise in the same machine, but in a different
directory.
This error happens all days with the same directory.
Performing the rsync by hand, it works without any problem:

% /usr/bin/rsync -az --delete --numeric-ids --relative --delete-excluded
--rsh=/usr/bin/ssh root at server1:/opt/clamav /data/backups/server1

I'm doing this backup as root via a daily cron.

Any idea about the problem?

ssh itself complains that it can't establish a connection, so rsync
doesn't really come into it.

Note that --rsh=/usr/bin/ssh is redundant, ssh has been the default
"rsh" for a long time.

I wonder if some firewall somewhere en route may be giving problems.

If possible you could try running rsync as a daemon on mx2.ecliente.com
and connecting directly to that; as long as you're not worried about
eavesdroppers along the way.
