I''ve always preferred returning JSON (or an array of JSON objects) --
it''s the simplest and most flexible for me. But I also have to develop
in ASP.NET, so what do I know :)

I just had a Moment of Enlightenment(tm)! I knew that it was just
XMLHTTPRequest, but I always assumed that it was so-called because it
returned XML.
My ah-ha just now was that HTML can be XML so I was just thinking about
it sideways.
