I am pleased to announce the newest release of Locomotive! Get it at: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/locomotive/Locomotive_0.4.0.dmg?download This is a bit of a rush release to get Rails 0.14.1 bundles out the door. So, for now, the web page (http://locomotive.sourceforge.net) is not updated to reflect this release. If there are no major problems from those intrepid enough to try it, I''ll update the web page and the version check. That said, it should be fine... New in 0.4.0 =========== * Works like normal Mac application now - doesn''t _have_ to be installed in /Applications - runs from anywhere! (except, perhaps, on paths with spaces in them). * Rails 0.14.1 Min and Max bundles (Rails 0.13.1 bundles still available) * Lighttpd 1.4.6 * Should pick up locally installed ruby libs Gotchas ====== * You probably shouldn''t use bundles from 0.3.0 with 0.4.0. The lighttpd bundle from 0.3.0 almost certainly won''t work (the 0.13.1 rails bundles _might_). Hi all, Two things: 1. If you run tcsh, but Locomotive thinks you use bash, it''s probably because you have not changed your shell in the "proper" way. That is, if you look to see what Netinfo Manager thinks is your shell, it will probably have bash. I''m not judging you for your "improper" configuration, but it makes it difficult for me to pick up your choice programatically. In any case, I''m planning on moving it into the preferences - the default choice will be guessed for your system, but you''ll have the opportunity to change it. 2. Now that the Locomotive location is not predictable, the RUBYLIB environment variable needs to be set in the shell, but I forgot to do this. I will fix this in a 0.4.1 release on Monday, but until then if you want to run ''ruby script/...'' commands you will have to first add the RUBYLIB variable to your environment like so: export RUBYLIB=/Applications/Locomotive/Bundles/rails-0.14.1-max.bundle/Contents/Resources/ports/lib/ruby/1.8:/Applications/Locomotive/Bundles/rails-0.14.1-max.bundle/Contents/Resources/ports/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8:/Applications/Locomotive/Bundles/rails-0.14.1-max.bundle/Contents/Resources/ports/lib/ruby/1.8/powerpc-darwin7.9.0 (if you''re using tcsh, I''m assuming you''re enough of a wizard to figure out your proper syntax for this). Replace ''/Applications'' with the appropriate path for your system (if necessary). Ok, not to be overly picky, but since we''re dealing with pragmatism and Rails and "convention over configuration," shouldn''t we stress that shells be configured correctly (in NetInfo) so that Locomotive can work as it needs to? Rails usually just knows what to do, unless we tell it otherwise. If we don''t tell it in the correct manner, it doesn''t work correctly. It does a lot of guessing, but can only guess so much, and then it defaults to something. Anyway, no big deal. Just food for thought. :) Sean On 10/22/05, Ryan Raaum <ryan.raaum-Re5JQEeQqe8AvxtiuMwx3w@public.gmane.org> wrote:> Hi all, > > Two things: > > 1. I can think of three different ways to change your Terminal shell on Mac OS X (there are probably more) and the Netinfo (proper) method is probably the least documented/obvious. In addition, who knows that the "proper" way to set user environment variables on Mac OS X is in ~/.MacOS/environment.plist? I certainly didn''t until about three weeks ago. When you hit that interface between apple and unix, there''s often more than one way to do it, many of which will work in most circumstances... if we''re going to blame anyone for these complications, we will have to direct our ire at apple, AT&T, and the University of California at Berkeley... --ryan -- Ryan Raaum http://www.rockefeller.edu -- Bacterial Pathogenesis and Immunology http://www.worldmartial.com -- Black Belt Instructor http://locomotive.sourceforge.net -- Self contained one-click Rails for Mac OS X _______________________________________________ Rails mailing list Rails-1W37MKcQCpIf0INCOvqR/iCwEArCW2h5@public.gmane.org http://lists.rubyonrails.org/mailman/listinfo/rails

I''m not "new", but am definitely new to OS X. I had set mine in the Terminal preferences -- just changed it from "Execute the default login shell" to "Execute this command => / bin/tcsh". Now that you''ve pointed me to NetInfo I think I''ve got my default shell properly setup. Wow, that''s deep and random. This should be under an "Advanced" pane on System Preferences -> Accounts. After fixing that, I had to logout for the change to be visible to Locomotive - now it works great! (using setenv) [except for the Ruby path you mentioned already of course] FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!! --Steve _______________________________________________ Rails mailing list Rails-1W37MKcQCpIf0INCOvqR/iCwEArCW2h5@public.gmane.org http://lists.rubyonrails.org/mailman/listinfo/rails

Wow, I was just trying to make things easier on you, but you want to go right to the top! :) I definitely see what you''re saying--I certainly didn''t go to NetInfo to change my shell. I guess it''s more of a discussion for another list (somewhere): When should software take care of everything and when should it prod users to Do The Right Thing? Hmm... Have loaded the new version of Locomotive and the max 0.14.1 bundle, as well as run the following command Ryan forwarded along so I can run ''ruby script/'' commands from the command line, but am getting the following error when running a generate command: Fooly-Cooly:~/Desktop/TestApp bigo$ ruby script/generate controller say dyld: NSLinkModule() error dyld: Library not loaded: /Users/ryan/Desktop/building/ports/lib/ libssl.0.9.8.dylib Referenced from: /Applications/Locomotive/Bundles/rails-0.14.1- max.bundle/Contents/Resources/ports/lib/ruby/1.8/powerpc-darwin7.9.0/ openssl.bundle Reason: image not found Trace/BPT trap Anyone have any ideas? I ran the following command that Ryan provided in an earlier email due to a bug in the 0.4.0 release: export RUBYLIB=/Applications/Locomotive/Bundles/rails-0.14.1- max.bundle/Contents/Resources/ports/lib/ruby/1.8:/Applications/ Locomotive/Bundles/rails-0.14.1-max.bundle/Contents/Resources/ports/ lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8:/Applications/Locomotive/Bundles/rails-0.14.1- max.bundle/Contents/Resources/ports/lib/ruby/1.8/powerpc-darwin7.9.0 But am assuming this might be the culprit. /Ant
Did you open your Terminal from within Locomotive? There are other environment variables that need to be set. Also, I have been informed that the ssl bindings of the darwinports version of ruby are not entirely functional (and I am using darwinports ruby in the bundles - this will change...). --ryan On 10/24/05, Anthony Baker <anthony-ZEJemHc0OvwkEFqJWa3iIgC/G2K4zDHf@public.gmane.org> wrote:> > > Hmm... > > Have loaded the new version of Locomotive and the max 0.14.1 bundle, > as well as run the following command Ryan forwarded along so I can > run ''ruby script/'' commands from the command line, but am getting the > following error when running a generate command: > > Fooly-Cooly:~/Desktop/TestApp bigo$ ruby script/generate controller say > > dyld: NSLinkModule() error > dyld: Library not loaded: /Users/ryan/Desktop/building/ports/lib/ > libssl.0.9.8.dylib > Referenced from: /Applications/Locomotive/Bundles/rails-0.14.1- > max.bundle/Contents/Resources/ports/lib/ruby/1.8/powerpc-darwin7.9.0/ > openssl.bundle > Reason: image not found > Trace/BPT trap > > Anyone have any ideas? > > I ran the following command that Ryan provided in an earlier email > due to a bug in the 0.4.0 release: > > export RUBYLIB=/Applications/Locomotive/Bundles/rails-0.14.1- > max.bundle/Contents/Resources/ports/lib/ruby/1.8:/Applications/ > Locomotive/Bundles/rails-0.14.1-max.bundle/Contents/Resources/ports/ > lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8:/Applications/Locomotive/Bundles/rails-0.14.1- > max.bundle/Contents/Resources/ports/lib/ruby/1.8/powerpc-darwin7.9.0 > > But am assuming this might be the culprit. > > /Ant > > > _______________________________________________ > Rails mailing list > Rails-1W37MKcQCpIf0INCOvqR/iCwEArCW2h5@public.gmane.org > http://lists.rubyonrails.org/mailman/listinfo/rails >-- Ryan Raaum http://www.rockefeller.edu -- Bacterial Pathogenesis and Immunology http://www.worldmartial.com -- Black Belt Instructor http://locomotive.sourceforge.net -- Self contained one-click Rails for Mac OS X _______________________________________________ Rails mailing list Rails-1W37MKcQCpIf0INCOvqR/iCwEArCW2h5@public.gmane.org http://lists.rubyonrails.org/mailman/listinfo/rails
