Rails - Sep 2005 - (newbie) weird permissions on file uploaded with file_column

anyone else experiencing this? uploaded images of different sizes  
getting different permissions... a 12K one gets 644, 32K (or bigger)  
ones get 600, and so don''t get served up. at least I''m
supposing it''s
the image sizes that trigger this. happens both on my local server  
and on textdrive.

is there an option that deals with permissions when setting the  
file_column?
