Rails - Sep 2005 - Sending a file for download

I have an administration interface in my app that uploads PDF files  
to a folder in the public directory.  What I''d like to do is limit  
access to these files to certain types of logged-in users.   My  
initial guess is to somehow tie in sessions and .htaccess, but being  
a relative Rails newb I have no idea where to start there.  I came  
across a chapter in the online manual called ''Sending a file for  
download'' that appears to be blank.  Any ideas/suggestions on where  
to get started to tackle this problem?
