[OT] Rails intro video MOVs - what Open Source player to use?
Hi Railers, Slightly OT question here, but I have a friend who needs to watch the Rails intro movs, but is on Linux and has no way of using an actual Quicktime player. I''m also primarily on Linux, and remember having troubles getting the original "rails_setup.mov" video to work, so had to watch it on my ancient Windows laptop. Nether the original mov or the new version with sound will work for me in Totem, Mplayer, KMplayer or Xine, which seems to have left me out of options to suggest to my friend, who as far as I know, doesn''t even have Windows installed anywhere. Can anyone suggest an Open Source video viewer that is capable of viewing the Rails videos? Perhaps there''s an MPEG (or even AVI) version kicking around somewhere? I know Rails is quite Apple-centric in some ways, but considering it''s Open Source, it would be good if heavy Open Source users could also watch the intro video without having to jump through too many hoops, reboot in a different operating system, or use a proprietary media player. Open Source video apps can cope with almost anything these day, so why have the Rails videos in a format that causes problems with viewing for Open Source users? Just my 2p, but if anyone could suggest a good way of watching the intro movs on Linux, that''d be great. Hallelujah, I''m not the only one. mplayer, configured with up to the second codecs, might work. I''m lucky enough to have crossover office installed with itunes and quicktime, the plugin pops up in my browser just like it would on (mac|windows). I had intermittent success with the quicktime files in mplayer before them. Avi or mpg would be great if iMovie or whatever supports them.. http://www.codeweavers.com/products/ <-- done me well (I get IE6 on linux for compatibility checks while designing) -Matt B On Fri, 2005-09-23 at 12:31 +0100, Dave Silvester wrote:> Hi Railers, > > Slightly OT question here, but I have a friend who needs to watch the Rails > intro movs, but is on Linux and has no way of using an actual Quicktime > player. > > I''m also primarily on Linux, and remember having troubles getting the original > "rails_setup.mov" video to work, so had to watch it on my ancient Windows > laptop. Get and install w32codecs package. I am using Mplayer in Debian and Rails'' movs are playing fine. If you''re using Debian, add this to your /etc/apt/sources.list #unofficial deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ sid main apt-get update apt-get install mplayer w32codecs -- Karol Hosiawa

Anyway, it''s a great cross-platform player that supports a really wide repertoire of formats. //jarkko [1] http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ //jarkko -- Jarkko Laine http://jlaine.net http://odesign.fi _______________________________________________ Rails mailing list Rails-1W37MKcQCpIf0INCOvqR/iCwEArCW2h5@public.gmane.org http://lists.rubyonrails.org/mailman/listinfo/rails

I mostly run stable (x86), but for some things where stability is less important than bleeding-edge-ness (eg. video file compatability), I run the unstable versions.> I am using Mplayer in Debian and Rails'' movs are playing fine. > If you''re using Debian, add this to your /etc/apt/sources.listI do have the latest win32codecs installed, with the quicktime use flag. I''ve never encountered any problems with any Quicktime files except the Rails ones. I have just updated my libquicktime from stable (0.9.4) to unstable (0.9.7), but that hasn''t fixed it either. KMplayer and Xine just won''t play it, Mplayer and Totem crash. Still no dice. :-S ~Dave -- Dave Silvester Rent-A-Monkey Website Development Web: http://www.rentamonkey.com/
