Hey guys, I know this already exists: It''d be really cool if we had a website sectiony thing for rails which would be "I wanna do this" - "this is how you do it in rails" - and each time someone in the community solved a specific commonly- used problem domain, we could post a solution, or additional comments - thus we''d be "building on the shoulders of our community". Thus we''d be facilitating Rails becoming more and more easy. For instance, a section for peoples'' experiences and how-to''s on building password generators - with code even... that way using rails would be just ridiculously easy. :-) What I''m interested in is a set of keywords being assigned to all of the how-to''s so that we can "sort" or "search" by keyword, and therefore should be able to type whatever we''re interested in into a search box, and the relevant how to''s appear. For instance, if I want to find out about how to password protect my rails app, I''d type "password protect" into the search, and it''d come back with howto''s on how to do that, including maybe relative links to other sections of the site (set by the how-to-writer or other users)... ie "everything I need to know" about this particular topic. If I wanted to find out about how to write a find function (as I did for ages), then it''d be in there. Everything, pretty much. In other words, can it be organisable by multiple problem-domains rather than organised into sections such as "Deployment", "Database", etc. Perhaps I''ll bite my tongue until I''m able to suggest a more concrete idea of where this is going (it''s not fully developed in my head yet). Julian.
Julian, Documentation freak that I am, I love your idea. I have proposed it myself in other contexts. BUT, the problem is always one of who is willing to expend the time out front - to solve a problem before it reappears. We need someone like Tim Sutherland (in NZ) who puts out the Ruby Weekly News on the ruby-talk list. A compulsive saint, in other words. It''s a great idea, but...notice the response you''ve gotten. Everyone''s so into riding the wave that no one seems to want to want to improve the stock in the surf shop. And me? I''m so new at this I wouldn''t know a rail from a good piece of steel. Tom C.
