Favorite (open-source) HTML editors for RoR??
I''m starting up a couple of RoR web development projects. What HTML editor do people recommend, and why? It pretty much has to be open source, and I''d prefer that it be available in Gentoo, since that''s where I do most of my work. -- M. Or if you want "real" reasons: * psgml mode is cool for editing (X)HTML/XML/Whatever-ML, lots of handy stuff * MMM mode is cool for adding highlighting to HTML for things like Javascript/CSS/PHP/RHTML/whatever other crap you can bastardize your HTML with * It''s extensible with Lisp (vimscript is blegh.) * dmacro is rad. * probably a gajillion other reasons, but those are the coolest -- Scott Barron Lunchbox Software http://lunchboxsoftware.com http://lunchroom.lunchboxsoftware.com

Well ... OK ... I was looking for something more WYSIWIG than emacs. This is a business website -- it has to look good and work in numerous browsers, etc. The thread on web site design whetted my appetite for that sort of thing. If I gotta use a "programmer''s text editor", I''ll use vim because it''s in muscle memory. IIRC you can script vim in Ruby :). Scott Barron wrote:> > On Aug 26, 2005, at 12:11 AM, M. Not sure then. I''ve used TinyMCE with some degree of success. It was easy to drop into a Rails app, but I think it doesn''t work in Safari very well (if at all). In fact, the few that I have looked at don''t work in Safari. So if you find one that does, please post! -- Scott Barron Lunchbox Software http://lunchboxsoftware.com http://lunchroom.lunchboxsoftware.com

What I''ve got loaded at the moment are Quanta from KDE, Nvu, Bluefish and Screem. Of these, I''ve also got Amaya. Nvu looked the most "polished", but I don''t know how it will work with, say, rhtml pages. Scott Barron wrote:> > On Aug 26, 2005, at 12:44 AM, M. Edward (Ed) Borasky wrote: > >> Well ... OK ... Quanta is also very to customize, and there''s a ton of useful features for web development. (cvs integration with svn coming, tidy plugins, projects, project views, open over ftp, ssh, etc.) It''s trivial to add a konsole plugin too, so you can have a terminal right in the IDE. (I believe this has already been commited to the 3.5 branch) There is a VPL mode, which kind of like WYSIWYG, except that it actually understands, and generates valid code. BUT, it may not work with rails templates. The toolbars are very useful in regular mode, but I find the auto complete is so nice, it''s faster just to start coding by hand. There''s also excellent CSS support. Definitely grab the latest version 3.4.x or higher

Quanta version is Quanta Plus 3.4.1 (GPL version). Is there a (gasp) book about any of them I could find?
