Anyone know of a company offering Rails hosting with UK servers? Don''t want my super new app to suffer cross-Atlantic lag :) -- Robert Jones
Robert, I''m based here in London, I''ve got an account at TextDrive which I''ve had no problems with lag connecting to, or, I''ve also got a UserModeLinux machine running at Bytemark Hosting[1] where I''ve got a full Debian machine located at Jump in Telehouse North which you can do, whatever you want (within reason) with - I''ve got Rails and a bunch of other stuff running on it. The 30 a month plan (128Mb RAM, 6Gb disk, 30Gb transfer) does me well for running a couple of rails sites (one of which had a mini-slashdotting) Cheers Kevin [1] = http://www.bytemark-hosting.co.uk/r/shotgun On Mon, Aug 22, 2005 at 05:16:07PM +0100, Robert Jones wrote:> Anyone know of a company offering Rails hosting with UK servers? I''m not using Rails much currently since I have other fish to fry, but I will have another go at some point. I also did have to frig the debian install of mod_ruby, and since I use debian stable, the right versions for FastCGI didn''t want to install either. I''m wondering if it''s sensible to write up our rails installs up somewhere? Cheers, N ___________________________________________________________ Yahoo! I''m running against Debian unstable on it, don''t think there was much needed to get it working, basically upgraded to Apache2 and installed all the ruby fastcgi stuff and mod_fcgid I would write a document up, but it was long ago and far away and haven''t got a machine to install on again :( Cheers Kevin On Tue, Aug 23, 2005 at 11:11:39AM +0100, Nick Woolley wrote:> Kevin Fullerton wrote: > > I''ve also got a > >UserModeLinux machine running at Bytemark Hosting > > Me too. I''m a bit daunted by the thought of getting my own UserModeLinux instance up and running with Rails - especially given the gremlins that seem to gather around FastCGI. -- Robert
Hi, I''ve tidied my notes for Rails on Debian stable and put them on the Rails wiki here, since there seems to be no other guide for stable: http://wiki.rubyonrails.com/rails/show/RailsDebianStable As you can see, installing Rails on debian stable isn''t (or wasn''t) as simple as it could be, but perhaps someone knows better? The main obstacles were: * finding a backport for ruby 1.8 and mod_ruby or fastcgi * a fatal bug in ruby gems requiring a patch * some missing files in the mod_ruby backport package These problems might hav gone away now, if so please let me know. Also, I didn''t get fastcgi working in the end, although I do now seem to be able to install fastcgi. However I''e not had time to configure it. I hope this helps - Cheers, Nick ___________________________________________________________ How much free photo storage do you get? Store your holiday snaps for FREE with Yahoo!
