After Reading this: http://weblog.rubyonrails.com/archives/2005/06/16/fastcgi-gem-is-now-safe-as-086/ I tried to install the new FCGI gem 0.8.6 and got this result: ERROR: While executing gem...(Runtime Error) ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension. Any ideas? -- Alex Ezell

I ran into a similar problem this morning and ended up having to install ruby1.8-dev (in debian, anyway...) because it didn''t have mkmf installed. Ben

You need to install fastcgi dev kit from www.fastcgi.com Kent. This is what was in the "gem_make.out" file:It can pay to make a shortcut to cmd.exe, here''s a target that you can use (WinXP): %SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe /k %SystemRoot%\system32\autoexec.bat Once you''ve done that, tweak the properties of the shortcut to your hearts delight. If you check off Quick Edit and Insert modes under Options, you can use your mouse to copy/paste from a dos prompt. You can also jump into the autoexec.bat file and set any environment variables and/or paths.> ruby extconf.rb install --http-proxy http://localhost:5865 fcgi > checking for fcgiapp.h... no > checking for fastcgi/fcgiapp.h... noMight want to take a look at RubyForApache [1] "A self-contained installer that includes mod_fastcgi and mod_ruby for Apache 2.0 and corresponding Ruby extensions for Windows platform." So, do I need the fastcgi gem and the mod_fcgi for Apache? I have mod_fcgi working fine. I ran into this problem as well, and the install of ruby1.8-dev solved the problem for me, it was mkmf. gem was pretty crap about saying what was wrong, but it told me where to look, and I looked, and the logs were clear ;) It didn''t, uh, seem to do anything though.
