Rails - Jun 2005 - odd error when opening shell

whenever i go

require ''shell''

sh = Shell.new
###

i get 
private method `split'' called for nil:NilClass

if i comment out the sh = Shell.new line it goes away....

This happens to be in a model.

Anyone know what gives?
