Our association needs help to fix its web site: www.hitagroup.org We like most of the look -- the skyline photo, and the blue theme -- but there are a lot of little problems. For starters, it''s not flexible. We want to revamp the first few pages, and provide sections and links for (a) potential customers, (b) potential members, and (c) current members. Right now we don''t even have the passwords to make that kind of change, or to upload new pages; only a portal that lets us add and edit limited parts of the site, such as events. Next, the information in the database is not secure. For example, a casual visitor can see that a member is behind on their dues. A member who logs in can view or change other member''s information, including their username. We have a budget and an idea of the cost. Here''s a summary of other information: 1. Keep main pages in HTML to make them simple to update (events, etc.), allow future reorganization, and be visible to search engines. (We can do basic HTML) 2. Desire not to use proprietary products, and not be limited to Windows servers. 3. Display correctly on more browsers. (e.g. Firefox) 4. Keep basic functions of current database of members. Much of it works okay. Public information includes name, phone, address, qualifications, etc. Visitors should be able to find a translator or interpreter by selecting the language pair and seeing a list of candidates. 5. There''s also some private information, that should be viewable ONLY by individual member and admin: username, password, membership status (dues paid?). However, with the current setup, any member can see and change any other member''s info. 6. Current page lets us do mailings to the entire membership. We want to improve it. The current system doesn''t allow anything but plain text, and the size of outgoing email is limited. Also, anybody can use it We want to limit it to officers. (more below) 7. The database was designed to designate some members as officers of the association (able to use the mailing list and make certain database changes) but we have no idea how to use it, or any passwords. 8. We need some changes to the Corporate and Institutional types of memberships -- mostly the same information, but displayed differently for the two types. More details later. 9. As for repopulating the database, we have the membership information but not all in one place in a database format. At the worst, we''ll just retype it and ask each member to double-check. (over 200 members now). 10. We''re not tied to our current host. (It''s a local translation agency, who''s hosting us free of charge. However, right now, the owner doesn''t have a webmaster or IT person who can fix our problems. For that and other reasons, we''ll probably be looking for a new host.)
