Looking for a Ruby on Rails mentor for Google Summer of Code
Hello Railers, I''m curious to know if someone from Ruby on Rails would like to become one of Google''s Mentoring Organizations. Google would like the mentoring org to: Create a pool of ideas for students to choose from. Have a person available to take in student ideas should they not find something that appeals to them. Have a person available to review the incoming applications marked for that organization and decide who should go forward with the effort. Have a person to monitor the progress of the students and mentor them as the project goes forward. Have a person ready to take over for that person in the event they go on vacation, are hit by a bus, etc... Be able to tell us about the developer, how they worked with the group, if they should be invited back should we do another summer of code, etc.. I''ve got the idea part down, developing a learning management system. I''ve worked with a bunch written in PHP and Flash-- there''s plenty of room for Rails to shine in elearning. I''m writing up the project plan today and can forward it on to whoever would like to get involved in the mentoring process. The Google Summer of Code time frame is 3 months for completion. The mentoring org also receives a $500 donation. A nice bonus for guiding the eager and willing students. Please email me if there''s anyone who''d like to join on as a mentor. Thanks a bunch, Vanessa Pagan

Re: Looking for a Ruby on Rails mentor for Google Summer of Code
While not personally wishing to join as a mentor myself, I know there are others in the ruby community who would like to take something like this on. There appears to be some confusion over admitting new mentoring origanizations to the Summer of Code though. See [1] for details. Do you know if Ruby Central can still be added as a mentoring organization? Re: Looking for a Ruby on Rails mentor for Google Summer of Code
I have forwarded this message on to Greg Stein at Google who is working on the SoC project. I don''t know if it''ll help, and I have heard that they''ve received numerous project proposals already. My hunch would be that they have plenty to keep them busy for this first go-round. Re: Looking for a Ruby on Rails mentor for Google Summer of Code
>Do you know if Ruby Central can still be added as a mentoring organization? > >I see the conflict on the Google page. The first page says you can join as a mentoring organization, the mentoring FAQ page saying that they will not list anymore new organizations and the application page still has the option for Other Organization open. If the organization can meet the listed requirements of being a mentor, the student still has the ability to add the org. This may change as the day progresses but I''m going to do my best to apply as soon as possible before any more changes arise. --Vanessa
