Rails - Jun 2005 - Associations causing validations to be run multiple times

I have a Person record that has many associations some of them
associating to itself. I use 

validates_presence_of :last_name

The problem is this that two errors come back:

2 errors prohibited this person from being saved

There were problems with the following fields:

  Last name can''t be empty
  Last name can''t be empty

If I remove the associations the validation is only run once.

Any ideas?
