The book appeals to the Rails beginner and intermediate programmer. Coming to Rails fresh, I was able to "get it" quickly with this book. As now somewhat knowledgeable in what Rails offers, I''m able to sweep back through and pick up the intricate details that weren''t relevant in my first pass. An Advanced Rails developer would likely learn a few tricks too, but for these folks they should buy a few copies of the book to give to their friends and family to get them riding the Rails too :)) Erik

The first chapters serves as a nice introduction and then it escalates to more advanced topics, the "Rails in depth" chapters and forward was where I found the most interesting things. To be perfectly honest I don''t think seasoned rails users will find much new in there, but it does act as a nice way to sum it all up, sprinkled with the occasional hey-I-didn''t-know-you-could-do-it-like-that. But then again, I just skimmed through it and I''m in no way disappointed by the book (even in beta form), not at all. In fact, it''s just way a "Rails book" should be, start of easily and then its bring it on. Just like Rails you know ;) I''d say it''ll suit most Rails developers and it''s defiantly on the "list of things to recommend" whenever people ask about Rails. - johan -- http://johansorensen.com http://theexciter.com

I really appreciate all the positive comments---now I just have to get the final book ready :) Enjoy! Dave
For those who are interested, its 506 pages long.. just incase you wanted to print it out and needed to know how long it was. Load up the Xerox, wait til everyone leaves the office and let that baby loose! ;-) _______________________________________________ Rails mailing list Rails-1W37MKcQCpIf0INCOvqR/iCwEArCW2h5@public.gmane.org http://lists.rubyonrails.org/mailman/listinfo/rails
The funny thing is that I had my mom go back to her work when everyone was gone to print it... that is where she is now. :-) The only thing I miss about my old job is being able to print 1000 pages and nobody would even care. This probably isn''t the forum for political activism, perhaps.
I thought it was pretty expensive - and I can''t afford that right now (poor student ;) Especially when you consider that, when you own the PickAxe, you get the PDF for 10 US$ Rob

This book is just great. Everywhere you turn, it''s just good stuff. I suspect this list is going to be quieter than usual for a day or two! I tried to write a review for my blog... but ended up just gushing about how great the book is, and how nice it is to be reading it... -ray -- Raymond Brigleb, Needmore Designs Website http://needmoredesigns.com/ Email ray-THGPwszTed5CpjqP0VxSwUEOCMrvLtNR@public.gmane.org Phone 503.490.4595
I''ve skimmed through the whole book, and am now on page 53 actually reading it, and so far I''m highly impressed. This is exactly the kind of book I like - lots of actual coding, with clear instructions and theory appearing as needed. First time in ages I''ve looked forward to coding examples. I didn''t expect to have this book until August, but to have it now with a number of my questions already answered! Very well done. And the cart example looks to be written to an intermediate level. Can''t wait to get deeper into it. I haven''t felt this excited about a tool since the first time I used Delphi for a db app, after having been a VB 3-4 hacker (back in ''95 - what a horror VB was). Rails feels just like that time, an easier and more powerful framework, but this time I''m not paying $1800 for the Enterprise Version! _______________________________________________ Rails mailing list Rails-1W37MKcQCpIf0INCOvqR/iCwEArCW2h5@public.gmane.org http://lists.rubyonrails.org/mailman/listinfo/rails
Good book, it''s keeping me up late tonight. With the railroad ties on the cover, will it become known in the UK as the "sleeper book"? ;-)

I can see the weekend disappearing in a haze of caffeine :) - and please spare a thought for our office laser printer :D

I have just ordered the book and got the download link 6 minutes later! I am especially interested in the parts of Rails I payed few attention until now, like Ajax, AWS or Aggregation.
