I''m looking for recommendations of development tools on Linux. I''m currently using XEmacs, but while I''m very comfortable with the editor itself, I tend to get lost among the multiple (view) files of the same name; speedbar helps a little. FreeRIDE has the benefit of an integrated debugger, but otherwise I feel clumsy when using it. Currently, I''m looking at Ruby Development Tools for Eclipse (http://rubyeclipse.sourceforge.net/), which look promising, especially as I''m well-versed in Eclipse already. What do others use and recommend? Eclipse is serving me well for Ruby and Rails. I''ve used Eclipse for a while and can vouch for it doing a good job. The Subversion plugin had a few bugs on Linux if you are using it for version control. Other than that, KDevelop has been reported to do well also. I find myself using vim with the eruby.vim syntax highlighting add-in most of the time. There was a thread back in March/April about this also. Some of the suggestions then were Emacs, Scite, Jedit, FreeRide. jim
RDT/Eclipse here, plus breakpoint.rb by Florian Gross. By the way, I wonder if there is a solid Ruby debugger anywhere, or if there isn''t, why? breakpoint.rb is cool, but it fails in some fairly common situations. All other debuggers that I know of have the same property. -- Best regards, Alexey Verkhovsky Ruby Forum: http://ruby-forum.org (moderator) RForum: http://rforum.andreas-s.net (co-author) Instiki: http://instiki.org (maintainer)
I liked both RDT for Eclipse and Kdevelop. So you get a debugger fully integrated into your IDE, where you can set breakpoints, examine variables, step line by line, etc just like with Java files in Eclipse or Visual Studio etc. You can debug rails applications by setting script/server.rb as your run target (yes, copy or rename server to server.rb to satisfy Arachno quirk). I find I don''t often need to do this, but on the rare occaisions it is necessary it is a real time saver. I always leave WEBrick running in the IDE and when I need to set a breakpoint I just do. I''ve left WEBrick running for days in the IDE like this and it never throws a fit. This IDE is still in a beta version and has some bugs but it is very promising, I''ve been using it for several weeks. http://www.ruby-ide.com
Asbjørn Bjørnstad wrote:> What plugin do you use to edit the (r)html files?Me, none :) I''ve tried a couple of plugins for XML and HTML editing, and neither was a good fit. I live happily enough without it, but some syntax coloring and maybe code templates / autocompletion for RHTML would be nice to have. If anyone has any recommendations in this department, please share. -- Best regards, Alexey Verkhovsky Ruby Forum: http://ruby-forum.org (moderator) RForum: http://rforum.andreas-s.net (co-author) Instiki: http://instiki.org (maintainer)
