how to avoid cheating?

Re: RailsDay.com Launched, contest to be held June 4th!
The organizers of Railsday have come up with a method to prevent cheating, however we are not at liberty to discuss it in detail. You''ll have nothing to worry about if you are just honest. -Lucas http://www.rufy.com/ On Apr 15, 2005, at 1:16 AM, hui wrote:> how to avoid cheating? > _______________________________________________ > Rails mailing list > Rails-1W37MKcQCpIf0INCOvqR/iCwEArCW2h5@public.gmane.org > http://lists.rubyonrails.org/mailman/listinfo/rails

One question: How is this going to be judged exactly? Will the apps be judged just on user experience, or will the elegance of the source code be taken into account? Another question: are we allowed to use the latest svn trunk of rails, or at least the latest beta gem? I''ve been using the new find method with eager loading and I''m not sure I could go back. Course, by June it may be released already and this is all a moot point. What about those of us that tried to participate last week? Now we have a date that some of us are out doing Scouting activities and won''t have access to any computer. Are you going to provide a provision for us so we can participate in the new official date, but not on the same day? We could still follow the same rules, just do it a week ahead of time. The one rule that seems kind of vague to me is: You are allowed to dream up the idea before the competition. You can also do paper mock-ups (or the digital equivalent) of database schemas and UIs. (Anything too polished is counted as a mockup and is illegal) What do you mean by "too polished"? Being able to write out digitally-encoded DB schemas seems like a large part of the app to me. My recommendation is to say you can only talk about or draw on paper, but nothing digital. That seems to me to be less open to interpretation. This is an issue for those of us trying to collaborate online. We''ll probably discuss on IRC and throw some rough photoshop comps around. These will be the equivalent of mockups scribbled on bar napkins, nothing specific like most photoshop comps. I feel the opposite about a digitally encoded schema. Face it, these 24 hour apps aren''t going to be that complex. I plan to spend very little time on the database, and most of it on tweaking the views. How awesome!! From the RailsDay site: * 37 Signals is donating a lifetime subscription to Basecamp basic * The Pragmatic Programmers are donating six books of your choice * Odeo is donating an Apple iPod mini or a one year subscription to Safari Bookshelf * Textdrive is donating an Apple Mac Mini * Textdrive is also donating one year of free hosting with 1gb of disk space, 10 gb of bandwidth, 10 websites with email, and 20 MySQL databases I was just going to enter for the fun - didn''t expect prizes. This should be great!! :) Ben

How about this: You are allowed to dream up the idea before the competition you can also do paper mock-ups of database schemas and UIs. No digital mockups any more complex than a paper napkin drawing are allowed before the competition begins. -Lucas http://www.rufy.com/ On Apr 15, 2005, at 10:58 AM, Rick Olson wrote:> This is an issue for those of us trying to collaborate online. Ruby Central is also giving one free pass to RubyConf 2005. This will be a "full" registration including the standard conference meals, but not including travel or hotel stay. There are more prizes yet to be announced as well.> * 37 Signals is donating a lifetime subscription to Basecamp basic > * The Pragmatic Programmers are donating six books of your choice > * Odeo is donating an Apple iPod mini or a one year subscription > to Safari Bookshelf > * Textdrive is donating an Apple Mac Mini > * Textdrive is also donating one year of free hosting with 1gb of > disk space, 10 gb of bandwidth, 10 websites with email, and 20 MySQL > databases

How are the prizes going to work? 1st place gets first pick of prize, and so on? I don''t have access to change that now, but that should be the rule, nothing digital before it starts, only conversation and paper.
