Hi gents, I''ve finally decided to try out Rails, and so far it looks great. The docs are first rate and the code is pretty readable too, which is always handy :) I''m working through the ''todo tutorial'' with rails 0.9.4.1 and using sqlite3 (because I''m very lazy and wanted to keep everything in an svn repo so I can see how the tree changes). my config/databases.yml was originally: development: adapter: sqlite dbfile: db/demo_devel.rb test: adapter: sqlite dbfile: db/demo_test.rb (not dbfile: ../db/.... as the tutorial mentioned, so I''m assuming RAILS_ROOT changed at some point.) That all seemed to work until I scaffolded and rails actually tried to use it, it seems to do a require "#{adapter}" which fails. So I setup adapter: sqlite3 that seemed to fix things, but running rake now bombs, since there''s an if chain looking for for ways to clone the database matching the adapter name. (I had an earlier problem where the copy tries to System(''sqlite'') rather than ''sqlite3'', but a symlink to the binary fixed that). Has the top level Rakefile just not yet been tweaked to handle sqlite3? (I did have a quick look at hrac, but couldn''t see the Rakefile). Obviously I''ve only been in 5 minutes, so I may well have this back-asswards. Assuming not, I can send a patch. While I''m here, did anyone ever track down what stops ./script/server -d from working? Does it only work on some OSes, or is it just shagged? Here''s the stacktrace - it looked to me like a require failed - I wondered if WEBrick::Daemon chdiring to ''/'' could have been the cause? Slashdot just had the ONLamp article posted to it (thank Bart). If anyone''s interested in fielding questions, here''s the link: http://developers.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/01/21/1514234&tid=156
Nice job. I''m sad mine didn''t get posted, cause I think I wrote something like, "Ruby on Rails is the easiest web app framework I''ve ever used... I think I''m in love. *swoon*" On Fri, 21 Jan 2005 11:16:15 -0600, Trevor Wennblom <wenn0029-6BTuCrPg42A3uPMLIKxrzw@public.gmane.org> wrote:> Slashdot just had the ONLamp article posted to it (thank Bart). It was the summary blurb that O''Reilly.net, itself, posted about the article. Curt

It''s a bunch of nerdy guys who sit around *all day* posting about things they know nothing about. In order to be noticed you need to have your comment praised by the ones who post most frequently and have "karma points" to give out. I think there are people with multiple accounts who give themselves "karma points" in order for their insane opinions to be heard, so you see the "insightful" rating on completely insane postings. Its a loony bin. good for laughs and not much else. -Jeff

On the other hand, it feels good to be among the few who can really grasp Rails and Ruby beauties. Besides, if everybody in the world started using Rails, our competitive advantage would be gone, so maybe it''s a good thing to keep it that way. I certainly do not want to point my competitors in the Rails direction... ;-) It would be bad if Rails didn''t attract worthy contributors, but that''s certainly not the case, as all the developers contributing to the framework are top notch professionals and human beings, so we are safe for now. In the end, try not to take all those free offenses by the slashdotters too personal... ;-) Rgds
