Rails spinoffs - Aug 2007 - Prototype: automatic javascript response evaluation

Hello All,

I''m having some trouble getting this to work as I''d expected.

Given a server response that sets the content-type to
"text/javascript"
and contains:
var startLeft = -180;


The following client-side code fails (variable "startLeft" not found):
 
var xmlHttp = new Ajax.Request(url, { method: "get",
                                        parameters: params,
                                        asynchronous: false});
alert(startLeft);


Can someone help me out here?
