[R-jobs] PhD position in the field of combining Hyperspectral and Radar (L-Band) Remote Sensing of Vegetation
The Helmholtz Alliance of Earth System Dynamics aims at the development of innovative remote sensing products based on the newest satellite missions. The focus here is on quantifying dynamic processes within the bio-, hydro-, geo- and cryosphere to monitor and understand environmental change on a global scale. The Alliance will be the nucleus within an innovative network of more than 60 internationally renowned research institutions. At the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ alone, 4 PhD students will be working on respective topics. The successful candidate should hold a master/diploma in Earth Sciences or Physics. He/she has strong computational skills (C, R, IDL) and remote sensing experience. The responsibilities of the post will involve i) successfully combine remote sensing data of different sensor types (hyperspectral and radar), ii) derive robustly bio-physical plant variables, iii) up-scaling of remote sensing products via radiative transfer and/or eco-physiological models. Basic statistical and/or knowledge of plant physiology are of a strong advantage. Working language will be English.
