maxlen<-max(unlist(lapply(hitsplit,length)))
# fill the list with NAs
hitsplit<-lapply(hitsplit,NAfill,maxlen)
# change the names of the list
names(hitsplit)<-mmdf$Regulator
# convert to a data frame
tmmdf<-as.data.frame(hitsplit)
