Guido: Thank you so much for this, but I wonder, when there is a new release of R, how can I know which packages in contrib need to be re-compiled? I still have all the .zip files from 1.1.0 on my hard drive here, but I am unsure whether to install them under 1.1.1. Thanks for your help. We will tell you when this is not so. It last happened at 0.99.0, and the ReadMe in the contrib directory lists any dependencies that are later as the packages use new features of R. We know that ca 5 packages will need to be re-compiled for 1.2.0 nearer the time, and I will have such versions up before release. So at least in theory if you install a new version and do update.packages() you should be all set. (If as yesterday the CRAN master was having problems, you may have to try later.) By 1.2.0 we hope to have `compiled on version' checking in place for binary packages. -- Brian D.
