Hello, I am wanting to download the recent R update off the web. May I assume confidently that R package from the website is virus free? I apologise if this is a very silly question, I just need to convince myself if the site is very hygiene. Although I cannot say with 100% confidence, I can tell you they are virus-free with perhaps 99% confidence, that is if you choose to download from CRAN official site. Any thing downloaded from an "official" site are almost always virus free (at least my PC has not got infected yet from downloading from an official site)... However, it is always safe to have a virus scanner installed in your local machine, or server, and do a virus check before you install anything. I cannot give 100% guarantee, of course. But, I prepare them on a machine not connected to the net and protected. In addition, we don't have any incident reported. Anyway, as CRAN/R/bin/windows/windows-NT/ReadMe says: "CRAN does not have Windows systems and cannot check these binaries for viruses. Use the normal precautions with downloaded executables." guido -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- r-help mailing list -- Read http://www.ci.tuwien.ac.at/~hornik/R/R-FAQ.html Send "info", "help", or "[un]subscribe" (in the "body", not the subject !) People normally worry most about viruses on Windows, and http://cran.r-project.org/bin/windows/windows-NT/ReadMe says Note: CRAN does not have Windows systems and cannot check these binaries for viruses. Use the normal precautions with downloaded executables. If you are worried about viruses, I suggest you compile R from source yourself, or at least check the imported files with an up-to-date virus checker. I would *never* assume anything you download is virus-free, even if the site owner assures you so, as how are you to know that the site has not been tampered with, or another site is masquerading as what you think is a CRAN site, or .... -- Brian D.
