Hi, I was just browsing Springer's web site for Venebles & Ripley's book and found more then one edition. Is there one that is preferable to get in the context of working with R? Since the newest ed covers new versions of some libraries (nlme especially), I'd advise you to get the newest one and download the R online complements (from the book's website). The book is definitely worth its (hefty) price, and not too S-Plus specific. (R didn't do anything like enough in early 1997 when the second edition went to press, but we produced R complements and packages from mid-1998, as I recall.) In theory at least that is the only edition that is actually available. Sites like Amazon often list out-of-print books that they can't actually get. -- Brian D.
