R devel - Feb 2003 - 1.7.0 build error in debian stable i386

I'm running debian stable, with the addition of tcl8.4-dev, tk8.4-dev from
testing.

debian/rules build gives this ...

First off, congrats on doing it this way. Locally rebuilding a newer Debian
package against the given libraries of an older release is the Right Thing
as it gives you the full package management control.

Secondly, I suspect gcc et al are playing a role. Stable only seems to have
gcc-3.0 whereas testing has gcc-3.2.1  I am currently building 1.7.0 on
testing just to see if it works.  [ I had built the 1.6.2 packages on
unstable with gcc-3.2.2 ]

I was probably wrong here -- a few other papckages I'm involved with
required
g++-3.2 due to heavier C++ usage.  This should not be an issue here.

It failed when building the standalone math library due to NA_INTEGER 
being undefined.  As these tarballs are clearly labelled development,
I don't have a problem with that at all.
