After "image" and "persp" would it be interesting to als
have contour as a
generic function?

Interesting if you (or anyone else) has a need for it.  We try not to
make functions generic until it is needed.

I presume you would want

contour <- function (x, ...) UseMethod("contour")

?

As long as we're on wish lists (Paul Murrell??) it would be nice to have
contour (optionally) return a list of contours, so that one could
post-process them etc..  This would also, I think, eventually facilitate
drawing contours onto 3-D surfaces ... I thought about hacking this but
the contour function was too scary for me ...
