freedesktop - May 2004 - [fdo] knotify and gnotify

I was wondering whether freedesktop would look into implementing a
standard api for notification, or at least a standard api. To me this is
a great feature, and I miss it on linux system wide. i'm just afraid
that if it's left to the desktops then we'll have kde notifications and
gnome notifications and conflicts all around. but just the idea of
hooking an rss reader up to this seems to me to be a great idea.
