That patch is just wrong.  I've updated the PR with something that is
probably
similar to your patch (explicitly ignore a size of zero back from EDD).

BTW:
It's ZFS-only on my box so I upgrade the BIOS firmware to latest v1.2.0, 
anyway problems gone by
using FreeBSD 9.3-RELEASE zfsloader instead.
