On another note, which I'm not sure if it's related with this, the Xine library in Debian and Ubuntu is very broken with regards to FLAC decoding (and probably encoding). It's already reported on their bug tracker, but no ETA of when that will be fixed. Xine is used by Amarok, and maybe K3B too. -Ivo
