I'll try with 1.0.2 as well.

BWT, is it possible to have 'make check' less verbose, like only
give which tests failed?

FLAC 1.0.2 definitely works OK on alpha.  I am currently running a make

it has not completed, but has succeeded at everything it has attempted so
