I am running a RH6/7ish system on an abit bp6 with 2.4-test12 -smp running rock solid. I have a new drive that I want to use to test out a journa;ing file system on, and thus far have not been happy with reiserfs and have been waiting for ext3 on 2.4 (I had been considering xfs as an alternative but from what i've read it's a little too robust for my needs). Anyway, I guess I am missing a few things before I make a decision. I know there were some problems back in the day with smp and ext3 for the 2.4.x kernels. After reading the post about 'VALinux's 2.4.5 beta kernel with Ext3' I am still not sure on the state of ext3 with regards to smp systems. Can anyone shed some light on this for me. Thanks, -peel

Thanks, -peelThere are no known problems regarding ext3 and SMP. My default test system for ext3 is a 4-way box. Andrew and I are still working on fixing up one bug in the truncate code, and there seems to be a problem in fsck if you have special device inodes which get deleted while still held open, but other than that it seems pretty solid. I expect we'll push a new version for 2.4 out in the next day or two. Cheers, Stephen

It's completely solid in that respect. There are still a few glitches, but they are becoming increasingly obscure and they are not SMP-related.

That's the first time I've heard such a claim for a filesystem. j> Anyway, I guess I am missing a few things before I make a decision. j> I know there were some problems back in the day with smp and ext3 j> for the 2.4.x kernels. I've been running it on an MP box for a few weeks now, doing large builds, database mangling, and the like, and ext3 has been rock-solid for me. <b
