This will give you access to all the > 3rd party repos you'll want as well, such as epel and nux.also, try and scrounge another DDR2 SODIMM for that thing, according to my google search, it supports up to 2 x 4GB == 8GB, and you said you only have the stock 2GB. 4GB will be way better performance with a GUI, 8GB would be even better. you still have a really slow CPU and if its still got the original 5400RPM HD, a really slow HD, but don't make it triple-suffer from not enough ram.
