CentOS - Jun 2008 - LVM and ext3 filesystem question

Can someone please explain what the purpose of stride is on ext3? I have
been "googling" this for hours and wasn't really able to
understand the
underlying concepts. How does it fit with LVM, PV create's metablock size,
and hardware RAID controller?
