[CentOS] Can't get ipw2200 to work in CentOS 5 on Dell laptop
I've installed ipw2200-firmware-3.0-3.nodist.rf from RPMForge using yum OK. I've loaded the ipw modules with /sbin/modprobe ipw2200 and then /sbin/lsmod | grep ipw which gives: ipw2200 136873 0 ieee80211 33417 1 ipw2200 However, when I run system-config-network I don't see Intel Coporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG (eth1) in the list of adapters. Also, when I type the following command # dmesg | grep ipw I get this message: ipw2200: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200/2915 Network Driver, 1.2.0kmprq ipw2200: Copyright(c) 2003-2006 Intel Corporation usbcore: registered new driver ipwtty drivers/usb/serial/ipw.c: IPWireless tty driver v0.3 I've had loads of help so far from the CentOS list, for which I'm really grateful, but don't seem to be much nearer to getting wireless networking on my Dell Inspiron laptop - any more help much appreciated. [CentOS] Can't get ipw2200 to work in CentOS 5 on Dell laptop
Thanks again Phil, I've added alias eth1 ipw2200 to /etc/modprobe.conf, but I still can't get it to a) recognize eth1 and/or b) to list the Intel Coporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG adapter, so I can't confiure eth1. I'm obviously missing something, but with the help of people on the CentOS list, I think I'm creeping nearer to the eventual solution, so any more help is much appreciated! [CentOS] Can't get ipw2200 to work in CentOS 5 on Dell laptop
Thanks again Phil for all your help, It's now on the hardware tab OK and says ipw2200 eth1 ethernet configured! However, what I just don't understand (and sorry if I'm being dumb!) is why the "new" adapter just doesn't show up in the list of adapters on the devices tab as Intel Coporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG or some such. So the problem is when I try to set up eth1 with all the necessary wireless info (WEP key etc), I can't do it because I can't select the right adapter! I'm sure I'm nearly there, but this last "small step for man" is proving to be a bit of "a giant leap...."! Memory is hazy as I have not done this for quite a while, but I believe you also need to add the adapter in system-config-network with "New" on the "Devices" tab. It does have to show up on the "Hardware" tab for this to work. Assuming you get that far, it is good to create separate profiles to use when you move from wired to wireless. These can be selected at boot time by adding "netprofile="MyProfileName" (in my case MyProfileName can be "Wired", "WiFi", or a few other location-dependent values) to the kernel line in /boot/grub/grub.conf - otherwise defaults to the last used profile. Can either manually edit at boot time (requires you to remember the legal profile names) or maintain separate grub stanzas for different profiles. When I try to do this, I get these error messages on the command line: (system-config-network:3061): libglade-WARNING **: Error loading image: Failed to open file '/usr/share/system-config-network/netconfpkg/gui/network.xpm': No such file or directory (system-config-network:3061): libglade-WARNING **: could not convert string to type `GdkPixbuf' for property `logo' I don't know how to add the right adapter because it won't allow me to select the right one or add a new one of the form Intel Coporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG. Also, it seems to have configured eth1 as an ethernet device whereas I want it to be a wireless device. So I'm absolutely baffled and don't know where to go from here - I may just have to stick with Windows XP for my wireless connection. I just had occasion to do a fresh install of CentOS 5 on my IBM/Lenovo T42p laptop today (had been upgraded from C4 to C5beta to C5 for testing/QA purposes and was a bit of a mess), so I just went through configuring the IPW2200 from scratch. There is no /usr/share/system-config-network/netconfpkg/gui/network.xpm on my system, but I do not see any errors starting system-config-network from the command line. [root at hazard2 ~]# rpm -ql system-config-network | fgrep network.xpm /usr/share/system-config-network/pixmaps/network.xpm> I don't know how to add the right adapter because it won't allow me to > select the right one or add a new one of the form Intel Coporation > PRO/Wireless 2200BG. Also, it seems to have configured eth1 as an ethernet > device whereas I want it to be a wireless device. So I'm absolutelybaffled> and don't know where to go from here - I may just have to stick with > Windows XP for my wireless connection.I simply loaded ipw2200-firmware-3.0-3.nodist.rf from RPMforge, added "alias eth1 ipw2200" to /etc/modprobe.conf, rebooted, and the device showed up as eth1/Wireless in system-config-network (both the Devices and Hardware tabs). Listed as "Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2915ABG Network Connection" on the Hardware tab. (Comments about needing dkms in an earlier reply were off-base. That was apparently cobwebs from C4 days.) If the IPW2200 is showing up as Ethernet rather than Wireless it is incorrect. You may have leftovers from earlier attempts to install from tarballs. Given that and the other system-level problems noted above, I'd try a fresh install before going to the Redmond OS. Only took about 2 hours here from booting for a network install through a fully-updated and configured Workstation/Development install with additional 3rd-party packages (including Octave from EPEL, octave-forge, Acrobat Reader, Sun Java, Adobe Flash, VMware, and WiFi - cheating a bit - I had other working systems to draw configs from and pre-built local packages for acroread, octave-forge, and Java). Thanks Phil, I might just do a complete re-install of CentOS 5 when I return home from holiday in Spain tomorrow! This attempt to get wifi working has kept me occupied for the last 2 weeks or so (among other things). The problem is, I have to remember exactly what are the correct steps along the way so that I don't end up with the same problem(s)! Andy Sorry you're having such problems. Phil Thanks again! _______________________________________________ CentOS mailing list CentOS at centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos -------------------------------------------------------------------- myhosting.com - Premium Microsoft?
