Sorry for the off-topic question but I need advice on a buying a ISCSI SAN for 4-6 servers running CentOS 4.4 .The main purpose for the SAN is to store email accounts (that will be accessed by imap - dovecot) and other documents. Minimal redundancy is required (e.g. dual power supplies, battery backed write cache or mirrored controllers) and price for a 2 TB configuration should be under $ 10000. Right now the short list includes Promise VTrack M300i and Dell/EMC AX150i. Do you have any experience with any of these models or can recommend a similar SAN that will meet the above requirements? Regards, Radu
See if you can get a compellent box for that price. They are the best. -Drew -----Original Message----- From: centos-bounces at centos.org [mailto:centos-bounces at centos.org] On Behalf Of Radu Radutiu Sent: Monday, November 20, 2006 6:14 AM To: centos at centos.org Subject: [CentOS] ISCSI SAN suggestion Sorry for the off-topic question but I need advice on a buying a ISCSI SAN for 4-6 servers running CentOS 4.4 .The main purpose for the SAN is to store email accounts (that will be accessed by imap - dovecot) and other documents. I have been using AoE for about 6 months now and it is really a great solution. Using it for storage for email, webhosting and remote backup. http://www.coraid.com/ For like $6200 you have the hardware minus the drives with capabilities to handle 15 750GB drives. Then all you need to do is buy some SATA drives to total the amount of space you need. You could have more than 2TB for $10000 that way. -- Matthew Martz CentOS Mirror Admin mdmartz at gflug.net

I have been using Equallogic PS-series arrays, and they are excellent: fast, easy to use, stable, reliable and Equallogic has great support.. Promise has really sucky support (based on my experiences). But of course the price tag of Equallogic is something different compared to Promise.. You get what you pay for.. If you wanna play with DIY solutions try Linux iSCSI Enterprise Target.. and maybe openfiler. -- Pasi> Regards, > > Radu

The EMC unit is ok, the web interface isn't the most intuitive, but it's not bad. However, the IET box has a flexibility that just can't be beat. Snapshots are handled better, and you can easily come in under $10k.

I don't know specifically about the Promise VTrack M300i, but i have a couple of my clients running Promise VTrak 15100: it's not very fast and the management software is not very good (we had and still have a lot of problem with the software). The Linux support is very bad (at least for the VTrak 15100). Did you have a look at Intel? Storage System SSR212CC? Somebody in this list ever used Intel storage products? We've had one in service in or dev/qe lab for over a year. It has been rock solid. And it's management interface is very easy. I can't comment too much on their support because we haven't really needed it. The couple of times we've called with questions they have answered them quickly and the answers were correct and/or helpful. I believe they have a unit that will fit your budget. Good Luck!
