[Asterisk-Users] Is SKYPE a threat or should we do something (together)
Skype is very succesfsfull and get more and more users, ... we can ignore them, accept them or do something,... My suggestion is that we try to do something, ... If we would peer to each other, than we get soon also a great amount of users together, and than our service becomes more valuable, ... Let's discuss advantages and disadvantages! bye Ronald -- Ronald Wiplinger (CEO of ELMIT) http://www.elmit.com +886 (0) 939--77-55-16 or FWD 511208 - I'm a SpamCon Foundation Member, #694, Verify it at http://www.spamcon.org PS: Spam prevention! There's even a service that allows unused lines to be used by others ( Hopefully someone can fill in the blanks here. I don't remember the name ). However, I don't think Skype and * have the same goals. They are, essentially, two different solutions to two different problems. At least, that's how I see it. Sean

It's proprietry and quite clever. They are trying to make money with PSTN breakout, break-in, voicemail and other value-add services. They use SIP/G.729 for interconnection with PSTN networks to carriers. Skype will continue growing and will gain a large user base, however if they have a long term model is as yet unknown as traditional carriers move to voice over packet. Look at BT in the UK with their 21CN plans, the PSTN will be switched-off by 2009. It's likely that voice calls (at least in the UK) will be bundled with line-rental as it will cost more to bill than transporting packets around. Skype is to Asterisk as Instant Messaging is to e-mail. Is e-mail dead? Is IM a threat? Asterisk is a full featured PBX system, how does this relate to a P2P messaging system? How many businesses will be dropping their current phone service and having Skype accounts on every desk? I am thinking......probably none. -Kerry -----Original Message----- From: asterisk-users-bounces@lists.digium.com [mailto:asterisk-users-bounces@lists.digium.com] On Behalf Of Ronald Wiplinger Sent: Tuesday, May 17, 2005 7:46 AM To: Asterisk Users Mailing List - Non-Commercial Discussion Subject: [Asterisk-Users] Is SKYPE a threat or should we do something(together) Skype is very succesfsfull and get more and more users, ... we can ignore them, accept them or do something,...
