Hey Everyone, I downloaded and installed the X-Lite softphone the other day (the lite version) and cannot seem to get it to work well. Don't get me wrong, it registers with my asterisk server and everything seems to work well, except the call quality really is horrible. I thought it may be the place I was trying it at (DSL) so I took it to the office and tried it right next to the asterisk box and had the same luck. My laptop is the Dell XPS, so power, ram, etc are not problems, and loading it onto my desktop system revealed the same results. There was also no difference between a NAT implementation and a regular (live IP) implementation of the software. I am getting stuttering speech, cutouts, etc all the time. Running my Cisco 7960 at the same locations and it works fantastic with no issues at all. Is anyone else using this softphone or does anyone know of a better softphone or some hints on configuration that may make X-Lite work better..? I recently just started using this phone again and it works very well. Call quality is excellent for me. I even have a user that VPNs into my network and attaches to Asterisk box with X-lite. Call quality is still excellent despite extra overhead from VPN. In case you did not have this link... http://www.voip-info.org/tiki-index.php?page=Asterisk%20phone%20xten%20x lite Your codec selection will also affect your perceived call quality. Are you using GSM or ULAw? I use uLaw on all internal connected softphones. Why not? We have the internal bandwidth. In short, there is certainly nothing wrong with the software. I would check... Codec selections - X-lite (deselect all but G711u) and in Asterisk configs (bandwidth = high is set?) X-Lite configuration exactly as in the link above... Headset is of good quality? (I use a $70 Plantronics USB headset and it works great) Are you running a ton of junk in your system tray? Do you have a billion little memory eaters loaded that you don't even use? You would be shocked at how many people don't realize how many junk items run in the system tray and eat memory. Drop things like, winamp agent, quicktime agent, winzip quickstart, etc, etc, etc.... I use my softphone as my primary phone now. All calls to my Polycom IP500 forward to my PC. I would never go back either. It is just too convenient to pause the MP3 player and take the call handsfree. BTW - If you want to see what kinds of junk are boggig your system, www.sysinternals.com has a ton of useful free utilities for download. I use their AutoRuns v6.1 to find out what junk items are getting loaded into memory at boot and remove them. All the other tools are pretty sweet too. Just running the free version. As far as I know, the only difference between the two is feature based, not qualityof call. Thanks, W -----Original Message----- From: Richard J. Turn of Silence Supression. If you have already done that then I think you are having the usual Xlite - Asterisk experience. At least I have the same problems with it.
I've had the best luck with SJphone. Using a USB headset really helps as well, opposed to the sound card or onboard audio with a standard headset. I don't like the skins that come with most softphones, and XLite is no exception. SJphone lets me disable it, and the profiles are nice, since you can copy them from computer to computer. I haven't tried XPro or eyeBeam. -- Dana On Tue, 15 Feb 2005 08:56:48 -0800, Richard J. You can also use the manager. Take a look at http://www.voip-info.org/wiki-Asterisk+manager+API ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kevin P. when connecting through a sip proxy server outside our network on the net to connect to a land line. the call connects to the land line. but we cannot hear the other party they can hear us.
Has anybody managed to implement Sphinx in their * system reasonably painlessly. if so: does it cause any problems with normal * operations. does it place any sort of constant heavy load on the machine. are there options for simple vs advanced implementations. all i am looking for is basicaly for a person to say a branch name. ie: johannesburg thanks
Hi all i am having odd problems. nothing worng with the server starting up or anyhting like that. asterisk server = P4 2.4 512M Ram 80gig/hd 100M/Lan Digium 4 port FXO Card i am using X-Lite on macines on the same network all running on 100M/Lan calling etc all works fine calling to PSTN works fine. the problems come in with actualy quality calls between people on the same network are not incredibly clear often small lag and on some calls the people can hear their own voices after they have spoken. +/- 1 to 2 seconds later. i have tried multiple codecs but no change. almost like a slight scratch on the line. we are all using Headsets. (good quality headsets). calling externaly to PSTN numbers gives the same results. usable but no where near as clear as an ordinary phone would be. any ideas greatly appreciated
