I have followed the instructions on the asterisk web site to checkout the three files using CVS. I then followed the instructions for make <filename> ; make install in each directory. There seemed to be a lot of error info flashing across the screen during each of the processes. I have verified that I meet the basic requirements linux kernel, openssl, readline with the appropriate devel packages installed. Is there someplace to find better documentation to get started. My objective is to try asterisk out using nothing more that my Red Hat 8.0 Linux machine and a couple of Windows 2000 PCs running Netmeeting. Is this possible? Is there decent documentation someplace to get me started? Thanks! Chip __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Search - Faster. Easier. Bingo. http://search.yahoo.com
Yes, it's possible. But you propably first need to compile at least asterisk if you want to use only SIP-SIP functionality. Start from installing the developement packages in RedHat install. Make sure you have the following packages installed: Bison libtermcap libtermcap-devel newt newt-devel ncurses ncurses-devel The documentation neglects to mention that you need these packages. People who have not done a lot of programming will not think to include these packages. (I'm not positive about the newt package ... somebody else posted that that was necessary. I have no idea what it is) -----Original Message----- From: asterisk-users-admin@lists.digium.com [mailto:asterisk-users-admin@lists.digium.com] On Behalf Of Chip G Sent: Wednesday, May 21, 2003 3:04 PM To: asterisk-users@lists.digium.com Subject: [Asterisk-Users] Need basic help getting started I have followed the instructions on the asterisk web site to checkout the three files using CVS. I have verified that I have the following packages installed as recommended. As previously mentioned, I have downloaded and executed make install in each of the folders for zaptel, libpri, and asterisk. However, it does not appear that asterisk will run. I am just trying to run Asterisk with a couple of SIP softphones and do not think I really need zaptel or libpri for now... just downloaded them because I couldn't get asterisk to work previously and though perhaps adding them would fix the problem. It did not work for me. I know I must be missing something basic but cannot figure out what I have missed. Just to be clear, I am definitely a newbie to Linux and compiling apps in this environment. Thanks for the ongoing assistance from this group! Is there a document that goes through a step-by-step for basic installation on a RedHat system?
