[Asterisk-Users] Xten / SIP Phones compared to GnoPhones
I have seen a couple of messages on the Xten and the work done by William Walsh (Kudos). It is not clear in my mind the advantages of SIP phones versus using GnoPhones (once we complete the work for the Windows version). Since I lack the experience with IP SIP phones, can someone, high level, tell me when it makes sense to use them. Is it complicated to set up on the Asterisk side? Thank you. Lots of talk, but very little resembling any momentum toward that goal. Given a good, fully functional, IAX client, that would be much preferable. The call quality is noticeable when I compare the quality of a sip call (from one * box to another) to an iax call (same * box to same remote * box), and I'd use IAX hands down. But there is just no real work being done in the IAX4Windows front :) So we have to go with what works. Now, I've since given up on using software phones, and am using the new TDM400 card from digium here. But I still plan to continue monitoring the softphone market. Perhaps I should post up a page with a small review of them all, since I have used most of them in the last few months in my efforts to find one that met my needs. -- William Walsh <william@wxw.org> Jabber: william@wxw.biz

Actually, my company has been working for 4 months now on developing a soft phone. The first version will be SIP only, and we will integrate H323, and maybe IAX in the future (IAX will more depend on licensing issues, our software will not be opensource). The first version is going to be for Windows only, and we will later do a port to Mac OS X, and maybe Linux. We will actually have a major internal release on Monday, and will test it with Asterisk then. We were wondering what are the functionalities and things people from this list would like to see in a softphone. You can go crazy, and tell whatever you want, we are interested... :) We are already planning to support video, text chatting like yahoo or MSN, communication encryption (for everything) in some future releases, multiple lines on the client side, multiple registration on different SIP servers, and in the future, registration at the same time on different servers: SIP, H323, and maybe Asterisk Servers with IAX. Whiteboard, application sharing, fax sending and reception, voicemail indicator, etc... The interface at first will be a messenger interface, for SIP server that support presence you will be able to have a list of people like on Yahoo or MSN and see your friends coming online and offline, and be able to talk to them clicking on their name (already functioning in alpha version). We would appreciate any ideas to make a better client that people on this list would like to see, and use.
