Rails - Oct 2004 - Date format

Hi railers,
Anybody know how to change the default US date format from to European style 
(dd.mm.yyyy)?
I have to switch the format in statements like
<%= @document.changedate %>
<%= text_field "document", "changedate" %>
<%= date_select "document", "changedate" %>
??
