In a xyz-loess fit to a set of data data, I have two distinct peaks with a saddle in between, but the slopes of the two peaks are not colinear. I have to find the path I would walk to get from one peak to the other over the saddle to construct a profile for it. Can anybody give me a hint? I can start with two line segments peak-saddle-peak and use optimization, but what exactly should be minimized for this task?
