R help - Oct 1999 - R with ESS: how to start

I installed ESS but I can't figure out what needs to be set
for it to recognise R.  I gather it's something to do with 
.emacs file, but none of the help files seem to mention it.
Like everything, it's probably easy once you know, but so
far I don't know where to look.

Its far a long time since i have installed ess, but if i remember correct
you have to add 

(require 'ess-site)

or 

(load "/PATH/ess-site.el")

Further modfication of ess-site.el is required, described at the head of
this file. General help=README
