Hello, I want to try the Design and Hmisc library from FE Harrell but, i have trouble with the copyright for the library Hmisc : in the home of the author : http://fharrell.biostat.virginia.edu/s/unix/ in the file Hmisc.README ###COPYRIGHT NOTICE ###You may not port code in the Hmisc library to R. Aie, Why ???? ###You may distribute these functions freely as long as you do so without ###financial gain, that you acknowledge the source, and that you ###communicate improvements to the author. and in a file find in statlib : http://www.stat.cmu.edu/S/Harrell/Doc/Hmisc.Overview.txt there's a less restrictive copyright : ### GENERAL DISCLAIMER ### ### This program is free software; you can redistribute it ### and/or modify it under the terms of the GNU General Public ### License as published by the Free Software Foundation; either ### version 1, or (at your option) any later version. ### whith no mention to an interdiction to port Hmisc to R Can I use (try to port to R [but I think i have too little knowledge to do that]) the Hmisc library found in statlib ?? I don't understand this opposition to R, can a people break itself a GPL'ed copyright ? And there's no such statement for the Design library, and there's already a port to R for this library in http://www.ci.tuwien.ac.at/R/src/contrib/Devel No flame Herv? Herve> Aie, Why ???? I have no idea why, but I suggest that if the author has placed that restriction on the code in his official web page it should be respected, irrespective of what more lenient restrictions may appear on other, older versions elsewhere, such as in statlib. Moreover I have to say that, while there is a lot of clever and interesting stuff in the Hmisc and Design libraries, I think R is, on balance, better off without them. They re-define so many fundamental method functions in S that it almost becomes like dealing with another system. My personal view is that it is a better policy to work with the base system as the designers intended, flaws and all, rather than to change the fundamentals, after which the objects you create and and code you write only work in this altered environment. I hasten to add that this is merely a difference of opinion between Frank and me. I grearly admire the work Frank has done for the S community and I applaud his generosity in making it so freely available. We currently are, and I sincerely hope we remain on friendly terms. That's why I'm declining to allow any of the functions to be used in R. -Frank ----------------------------------------------------------------- Then, he changed the copyright notice...
