Given the following device list, I am exporting one of the functions to Dom1 through PCI passthrough. $ lspci | grep known 04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Unknown device 4040:0002 (rev 25) 04:00.1 Ethernet controller: Unknown device 4040:0002 (rev 25) 04:00.2 Ethernet controller: Unknown device 4040:0002 (rev 25) 04:00.3 Ethernet controller: Unknown device 4040:0002 (rev 25) If I export just 04:00.0, it is visible (''lspci'') in Dom1. However if I export just 04:00.1 then it is no more visible in Dom1. I am using Xen310. As an additional information, I am seeing this behaviour on my ''new box''. Things were fine on my earlier box. It is possible that this is a platform specific thing. If it is a known issue, I would be happy to patch my tree. Otherwise I can debug this further post some debug logs for your scrutiny. I think it''s not usual to scan non-zero fns of a PCI slot if fn0 is empty. But actually pciback should be renaming the devfn address to a fn0 address anyway, unless you fiddled with pciback''s kernel configuration. If you grep for PCIDEV_BACKEND in your kernel build configuration, what do you see? -- Keir On 23/8/07 20:04, "Jambunathan K" <jambunathan@netxen.com> wrote:> Given the following device list, I am exporting one of the functions to > Dom1 through PCI passthrough. > > $ lspci | grep known > 04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Unknown device 4040:0002 (rev 25) > 04:00.1 Ethernet controller: Unknown device 4040:0002 (rev 25) > 04:00.2 Ethernet controller: Unknown device 4040:0002 (rev 25) > 04:00.3 Ethernet controller: Unknown device 4040:0002 (rev 25) > > If I export just 04:00.0, it is visible (''lspci'') in Dom1. I) In PASS mode, a) Guest domain *cannot* see fn2 if *only* fn2 is exported. b) Guest domain *can* see fn2 *only if* fn0 is also exported to it. II) In VPCI mode, a) Guest domain *cannot* see fn2 if *only* fn2 is exported. b) Guest domain *can* see fn2 *only if* fn0 is also exported to it. III) In SLOT mode, a) Guest doamin can see fn2 even if *only* fn2 is exported. A cursory look suggests that the difference in behaviour is due to the way pcifront scans devices. It scans non-zero fns only if it actually sees a device at *fn0*. Our device requires that the fn-no be preserved as such (even if other PCI params change) for proper working. I am trying to export 4 PCI functions in our device to 4 different domains. I am stuck at not being able to use *any* of the passthrough methods. If behaviours (I) and (II) above is as intended may I know why this is so?. If not, would you agree that this is a bug? (Xen304 kernel was hand compiled from vanilla sources as mentioned above) You seem to suggest that behaviour in Xen304 was buggy and has been addressed with Xen310. This probably got fixed in 3.1.0 but that has broken export of just fn!=0 to pcifront. The possible fixes are: 1. Revert to scanning all fns in domU. 2. Modify pciback to supply a dummy device of some sort on fn==0, to stop the scan aborting. I''ll have to look into this a bit. Option 1 is probably easier. -- Keir _______________________________________________ Xen-devel mailing list Xen-devel@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-devel

Option 1 is probably easier. As I worte accidently direct to Keir and not to the list, I face the same problem. I''d like to have option 1, because it worked fine and I don''t see a benefit of having a dummy device in the domU. Dedecating single fnX to a domain is very usefull for example to give the domUs ethernets of a four port card. I''m also running one domU that is only using one of the USB 1.x controllers of a USB PCI addon card. If you are building a 64-bit kernel then of course it is the file in include/asm-x86_64 that you need to edit. Make that change and rebuild you domU. Additionally, make sure you build dom0 with pciback in passthrough mode. Hopefully your problems will be gone! Let me know how you get on -- if successful I may check this change back into our linux-2.6.18-xen.hg repository. -- Keir _______________________________________________ Xen-devel mailing list Xen-devel@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-devel

Just to be sure I ''fixed'' linux-2.6-xen-sparse/include/asm-x86_64/mach-xen/asm/pci.h and made a clean build from xen source tar. I ensured that BACKEND_PASS is set to yes. The tracing you provide clearly shows that the kernel is *not* scanning every fn. It is only scanning every fn==0. The function of interest here is, I think, linux/drivers/pci/probe.c:pci_scan_slot(). Notice how it iterates on every fn but bails early if no device is found at fn 0 and !scan_all_fns. I suggest you add some tracing to that function to check that: A. It is being called; and B. Exactly how it is bailing without checking fns != 0, if it ireally is the case that scan_all_fns==1. -- Keir _______________________________________________ Xen-devel mailing list Xen-devel@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-devel

I guess we can just comment out asm-generic''s definition of that macro, as pretty much every architecture is defining it for itself anyway. Can you try that? Just have it defined to 1 in asm-x86_64/mach-xen/asm/pci.h, and comment out the definition in asm-generic/pci.h. If that works I''ll apply the fix to our tree with appropriate comments. This isn''t going to fly upstream, or probably even in vendor kernels, so longer term the dummy device in pciback is probably going to be required. -- Keir _______________________________________________ Xen-devel mailing list Xen-devel@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-devel

Please include these changes in the next stable release of Xen31 tree.
