I am having an issue where I am trying to test a weservice that I wrote by
connecting to it from ruby. When I submit my form that calls the webservice
it times out. you can see from the lighttpd log that the webservice
completes just after the timeout. any ideas? am I doing something wrong?

Is it possible that the lighttpd server is handling the request serially and not getting to the soap request until the original request finishes (aka times out)? If so is there a better way to test the web service? That is possible. How many fcgi listeners do you have set in your lighttpd.conf file? If its only set to one(the default) then add another by bumping the max-procs up to 2 and try again.
