Hi folks, I haven''t run Xen for sometimes and expect coming back. I have following questions; Host - Debian 5.04/Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit desktop Guests - Debian 5.04/Ubuntu 10.04/Fedora13 Windows Server 2008/Windows 7/Windows Vista all 64 bit RAM 8G onboard. 1) Can Xen support full virtualization, i.e. Windows can run on it without problem. 2) About sound. Is there any problem on sound in respect of guest? Host has sound. Can guest be setup to have sound? 3) Can utilities, such as CD/DVD writer, Scanner, Floppy, etc. be attached to the guest? Please advise? TIA B.R. Stephen Liu _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

You could probably try pulseaudio or something.> > 3) > Can utilities, such as CD/DVD writer, Scanner, Floppy, etc. be attached to the guest?Should be possible if it''s a usb device. However, looking at your environment and questions, I think Xen might not be the right setup for you. Try virtualbox instead. It can easily have sound and usb passthru for guests. -- Fajar _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users
Hi Fajar, Thanks for your advice. - snip ->> 3) >> Can utilities, such as CD/DVD writer, Scanner, Floppy, etc. be attached to the guest?> Should be possible if it''s a usb device.> However, looking at your environment and questions, I think Xen might > not be the right setup for you. Try virtualbox instead. It can easily > have sound and usb passthru for guests.I have here another PC running VirturalBox. It has all features as mentioned in my posting. This PC is running KVM/QEMU. It has following problems; 1) No sound on guests, Windows and Linux (Linux host has sound). 2) No "Copy & Paste" feature amongst host and guests. The developers of Libvirt already know those problems. I''m prepared wiping out KVM and reinstall a new virtual machine. I don''t expect building another VirtualBox here but wonder which virtualizer shall I use. I ran Xen (Open Source) before. It worked perfect without problem. At that time I didn''t need Windows nor need sound nor need attaching utilities. At this juncture I can''t think of any other virtualizers which can cater my needs. I also ran OpenVZ and VServer before. But Windows can''t run on them. If I can''t find another virtualizer I would just keep KVM. Thanks B.R. Virtualbox was designed as desktop virtualization from the start, so the problems you mentioned are high priority for them (and they got it working already). I''m guessing those are pretty low priorities for Xen/KVM/Qemu. -- Fajar _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

I contacted one of them about 3 months ago. He informed me that "Copy & Paste" may be solved by the 3rd/last quarter this year. But nothing has been mentioned on sound. Are you aware any alternative of VirtualBox other than VMWare? Thanks B.R.
