This is a valid request from a large group of users over tens of years.
Several arguments in favor have been forwarded, and every argument
against refuted.
Quit shutting down the discussion. Retroactively defending the
obscenely prolonged absence of this feature to save face is not an
acceptable way to handle bug reports. Your rebuke of this feature is
endemic of the typical anti-social behavior of BSD and one of the marks
of a badly behaved group of maintainers. You need to knock it off.
In summary, this feature is sorely overdue. Vague concerns of security
implications have been shown to be hollow. A migration path which does
not impact existing users has been laid out. This feature needs to be
added to OpenSSH, and it needed to be added 8 years ago.
